Episode 5: Toward Life-Coherence Wisdom

This deep dive is about misrelevance, wisdom, emotion, relation, repair, and the question of what truly matters for life. It fits beautifully after Health, Economy, and Peace because it gives the deeper “navigation system” behind the whole Life-Knowledge Commons. The transcript names the source paper as Toward Life-Coherence Wisdom: Relevance, Emotion, Relation, and Repair in the Service of Life and frames the crisis as one of misrelevance — making the wrong things matter.

Toward Life-Coherence Wisdom
A deep dive into relevance, emotion, relation, and repair in the service of life.

This episode explores a central question of the Life-Knowledge Commons:

How do we know what truly matters?

In a world overflowing with information, data, dashboards, metrics, alerts, and institutional signals, the deeper crisis may not be a lack of intelligence or a lack of information. It may be a crisis of misrelevance: the condition in which attention, emotion, metrics, institutions, technologies, and social systems organize life around signals that do not protect or expand life-capacity.

The episode introduces wisdom as more than intelligence. Intelligence can optimize a given goal, even when the goal itself damages life. Wisdom asks whether the goal, frame, metric, or institution is answerable to life.

Through the paper’s framework, wisdom emerges as a living integration of three domains:

emotion as biological viability sensing,
relation as the opening or closing of worlds of action,
and relevance realization as the cognitive process by which we discern what matters and what can be done.

The discussion brings together the work of Katherine Peil Kauffman, Humberto Maturana, John Vervaeke, John McMurtry, and Johan Galtung to ask how wisdom can be protected from capture by fear, grief, metrics, algorithms, institutions, or false ultimates.

It also introduces practical guardrail questions:

What has been made to matter here?
Does this actually serve and expand life-capacity?
What hidden harm or structural violence is being normalized?
What finite thing is being treated as ultimate?
What specific material care is required?

This deep dive is connected to the paper:

Toward Life-Coherence Wisdom: Relevance, Emotion, Relation, and Repair in the Service of Life

The guiding question is:

How can wisdom help life learn to let what truly matters matter again?
