We are living through a civilizational threshold moment — a collapse not only of ecosystems and institutions, but of the very coherence that holds life together. This paper identifies a unifying cause and a regenerative pathway: the crisis of boundary failure, and the restoration of Generative Boundary Intelligence (GBI).
What is GBI?
GBI is the life-function that governs how systems distinguish, filter, regulate, and integrate. From cell membranes to legal frameworks, from rites of passage to ecological limits, coherence emerges through well-structured, symbolically grounded, and adaptively responsive boundaries.
The paper unfolds in two arcs:
- Evolutionary Diagnosis
We trace how edge intelligence evolved biologically and culturally, how Indigenous and sacred traditions honored it, and how its loss through colonial modernity, industrialization, and technocapitalism has led to trauma, incoherence, and systemic breakdown. - Transdisciplinary Synthesis
We show how GBI repairs blind spots in key frameworks (LVOA, MMT, Doughnut Economics, Integral Theory, Narvaez’s work, Relevance Realization). We propose a full meta-framework for regenerative systems based on seven principles of boundary integrity and coherence design.
