Introduction to Liology

This presentation was given by Liology Institute founder, Jeremy Lent, to a Liology Gathering in Nicasio, CA, in September 2013.  It’s a great way to get an a basic understanding of liology in less than half an hour.

The Principles of the Practice of Liology

This video offers a deeper understanding of what liology can mean for you in practice.  It’s most valuable to watch it after watching the “Introduction to Liology” video above.

Liology: Towards an Integration of Science and Meaning

This is a “studio version” of a talk originally presented by Liology Institute founder Jeremy Lent at The Systems View of Life seminar held at the Center for Ecoliteracy, Berkeley, California, in June 2012

The following presentations by Liology Institute founder Jeremy Lent contain ideas that are relevant to liology, although not directly on the subject.

Humanity’s Changing Metaphors of Nature

This presentation, given in August 2012 in Grand Rapids, MI, at the Midwest branch of the World History Association, explains the power of metaphor in human cognition, and shows how humanity’s metaphors of Nature have changed as we transitioned through different stages of our history.

It also looks at current metaphors of nature proposed in response to global climate change, and some of their disturbing entailments.

The Relationship Between “I” and “My Self”

This presentation is about our “split self” – the universal human experience of having both an “I” and a “self” as a result of our uniquely developed prefrontal cortex which permits us to conceptualize a narrative of our lives, a past and a future.

This split self gives rise to what the Buddhists call “dukkha” – a sense of alienation from our own embodied experience.

This is an informal, “home movie” version of the presentation which was given to the Science and Non-Duality conference in San Rafael in September 2012.

The Tyranny of the Prefrontal Cortex

This 15-minute presentation, given at the Ecology of Ideas conference in Asilomar, CA in July 2012, introduces the idea of cognitive history: understanding the path of human history from a cognitive perspective.

It uses the metaphor of the “tyranny” of the prefrontal cortex (“pfc “) to show how the coevolutionary ratcheting effect of culture and humanity’s unique pfc-mediated symbolic consciousness has led to the current unsustainable trajectory of our global civilization.

Tyranny of the Prefrontal Cortex: Q&A

Here are some questions and answers following the  presentation, Tyranny of the Prefrontal Cortex, given at the Ecology of Ideas conference in Asilomar, CA, in July 2012.
