This white paper applies the life-coherence framework to St. Kitts and Nevis as a national diagnostic and transition architecture. It argues that the Federation’s central development challenge is not a set of isolated sectoral problems, but a deeper pattern of mis-nesting: the tendency for abstract systems such as finance, GDP growth, Citizenship by Investment revenue, tourism throughput, imported consumption, debt, and institutional targets to outrun or degrade the life-support systems they are meant to serve. These life-support systems include water, food, health, energy, households, youth, coasts, ecosystems, culture, governance, and the civil commons.
Building on the concepts of life-ground, life-capital, civil commons, mis-nesting, and re-nesting, the paper interprets the country’s fiscal pressures, water insecurity, food and fuel import dependence, noncommunicable disease burden, youth vulnerability, waste leakage, tourism exposure, climate risk, and governance-data gaps as interconnected expressions of one national life-system. It proposes seven mutually reinforcing national missions: Water First Federation; Food as Medicine, Farming as Sovereignty; Renewable Energy as Fiscal Medicine; Youth Belonging and National Service; Circular Island Metabolism; Regenerative Tourism; and Life-Capital Budgeting and Sovereign Resilience.
The paper further proposes a National Life-Coherence Dashboard, a Life-Capital Test for public investment and policy decisions, a life-capital budgeting approach, and a sequenced 100-day, one-year, and ten-year roadmap. Its central claim is that St. Kitts and Nevis can deepen its Sustainable Island State aspiration by moving toward a Life-Coherent Island Commonwealth: a whole-Federation development model in which finance serves life-capital, tourism serves place, food serves health, energy serves sovereignty, youth become co-builders of national renewal, and governance protects the conditions of intergenerational flourishing.

Life-Coherent Medicine: Healing the Organism in the Worlds We Conserve proposes an integrative clinical and public-health framework that places disease, treatment, healing, prevention, and policy within the organism–niche relation. It defines health as life-capacity enabled, healing as life-capacity restored, and flourishing as life-capacity expressed through dignity, relation, meaning, participation, and ecological belonging.
The book distinguishes salugenesis, the organism’s inner biology of healing completion, from salutogenesis, the outer field of health-generating conditions. It argues that health is sustained when exposure remains within restorative capacity and that disease, distress, dysfunction, and breakdown become more likely when cumulative exposure exceeds repair and margins collapse.
The framework is applied to immune disease as maladaptive phase-locking, neuropsychiatric disease as disturbed living coherence, noncommunicable diseases as conserved organism–niche miscouplings, and multimorbidity as layered miscoupling. Clinical practice is reframed through diagnosis as coherence assessment, the clinical encounter as structural coupling, treatment as protection-repair-re-entry, minimum sufficient force, and the CARE method: Contextualize, Assess, Re-open, Embed and Evaluate.
At the systems level, the book presents primary care as relational infrastructure, public health as niche repair, civil commons as health infrastructure, dashboards as instruments that should serve life, and Caribbean/SIDS medicine as a place-based test case for life-coherent practice. The final sections establish safeguards against anti-biomedical misuse, patient blame, vague holism, overreach, and unsupported claims, while proposing a research agenda for testing and refining life-coherent medicine.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are conventionally understood as chronic biomedical conditions shaped by behavioral, metabolic, environmental, commercial, social, and genetic risk factors. That framing remains indispensable for surveillance, prevention, and evidence-based clinical care. Yet it is incomplete when it treats the body as the primary site of disease while under-describing the recurrent organism–niche relations through which chronic disease patterns are generated, conserved, and transmitted across daily life.
This white paper develops a Maturana-informed framework for NCDs grounded in autopoiesis, structural coupling, cognition as living, emotioning, languaging, and the biology of love. It proposes that many NCD patterns can be understood as stabilized organism–niche miscouplings: conserved ways of living in which biological, emotional, relational, commercial, ecological, and institutional conditions recursively reproduce disease-producing trajectories. The framework does not replace biomedical diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, surgery, oncology, renal medicine, emergency care, or public-health best buys. It places those interventions within a wider biology of living in which healing requires transformations in the relational conditions that make healthier patterns of living possible.

The contemporary Beyond GDP agenda marks a significant opening in global development thought. It recognizes that gross domestic product cannot adequately measure well-being, equity, ecological sustainability, social resilience, or future viability. The 2026 United Nations report Counting What Counts: A Compass of Progress for People and Planet proposes a globally applicable dashboard of 31 indicators designed to complement GDP by tracking well-being outcomes, equity and inclusion, environmental sustainability, and the forms of capital that support future well-being. It also emphasizes that indicators should inform planning, budgeting, and policy rather than merely describe outcomes (United Nations, 2026).
Yet better measurement alone cannot explain why the world economy continues to generate ecological overshoot alongside widespread deprivation. Jason Hickel’s 2026 IDS Annual Lecture, “Capitalism, Imperialism and Ecology,” provides the missing political-economic layer. Hickel argues that the central contradiction of the present world system is not scarcity in the aggregate, but misallocation: vast productive capacities are organized around capital accumulation rather than human needs, ecological repair, and democratic provisioning. He frames the global crisis as a double failure: planetary boundaries are being exceeded while billions remain deprived of decent living standards (Hickel, 2026).
This white paper develops a life-coherent synthesis of the Beyond GDP agenda and Hickel’s political economy. It argues that progress must be redefined not as output expansion, but as the democratic organization of production, distribution, finance, trade, technology, and governance around life-capacity, ecological integrity, structural repair, and future viability. Hickel’s analysis is interpreted alongside McMurtry’s life-value onto-axiology, Galtung’s theory of structural violence, and Maturana and Varela’s account of autopoiesis and world-bringing. The resulting framework reframes development as life-coherent provisioning: the creation of social, ecological, institutional, and economic conditions through which all people can live dignified lives within planetary boundaries, without externalizing harm onto other peoples, species, ecosystems, or generations.
