Executive Summary
Human beings are coherence-seeking organisms. At the level of the nervous system, coherence emerges when form, physiological state, and world-interpretation remain aligned. This allows perception to be accurate, movements adaptive, emotions tolerable, and meaning coherent.
However, coherence is not maintained by the individual alone. It depends on:
- Relational co-regulation (attunement, safety, synchrony)
- Cultural and narrative coherence (shared meaning and story)
- Institutional reliability and fairness (trust and belonging)
- Economic systems that provision life needs (security and sufficiency)
- A stable and regenerative biosphere (the living conditions of existence)
When any of these layers become destabilized, coherence breaks down in predictable ways:
- Hypervigilance (constant alarm, polarization, acceleration)
- Collapse (exhaustion, passivity, disengagement)
- Fragmentation / Dissociation (breakdown of meaning and identity)
These patterns appear in:
- individuals experiencing trauma or chronic stress
- families and communities under relational strain
- societies experiencing mistrust and cultural polarization
- institutions suffering legitimacy crises
- economies driving inequality and precarity
- ecosystems under extraction and climate destabilization
This is not coincidence. It is the same regulatory logic expressing itself at different scales.
Therefore, healing and transformation require a cross-scale regenerative sequence:
Support Form
(physical stability, basic needs, ecological foundations, civil commons)
→ Regulate State
(autonomic balance, co-regulation, collective emotional climates)
→ Restore Shared World
(trust, cultural meaning, institutional legitimacy, orientation)
→ Rebuild Meaning
(identity, purpose, contribution, continuity across generations)
This sequence applies equally in clinical practice, education, community building, institutional reform, economic design, and ecological restoration.
The core message is simple:
Coherence is the foundation of life.
Regeneration is coherence restored across time.
This white paper provides the conceptual framework, diagnostic tools, and implementation pathways needed to cultivate coherence from the scale of the body to the scale of the planet.
