The current planetary crisis is not merely ecological, political, or psychological — it is moral at its root. This paper addresses the deep question raised by Darcia Narvaez: How did humanity come to walk a path of self- and planet-destruction? We argue that the answer lies in a multi-level breakdown of relational, symbolic, and developmental coherence. Through a transdisciplinary integration of Narvaez’s evolved nest theory, the symbolic developmental arc of TATi grammar, the embodied principle of symbolic recursion, and the value framework of life-value onto-axiology, we diagnose and reframe the sources of moral fragmentation in modern societies.
We trace how developmental trauma — especially in early life — leads to the formation of partial selves unable to access the interoceptive, relational, and symbolic intelligences required for coherent moral discernment. These partial selves are especially vulnerable to obedience-based ideologies and institutional scripting, which replace embodied moral awareness with rigid codes and narrow affiliations. Through experiments, historical analysis, and neurobiological evidence, we demonstrate how modern systems manufacture evil not through overt cruelty, but through the symbolic and developmental suppression of moral agency.
To address this crisis, we present the TATi grammar (Tend, Align, Transcend, Integrate) as a regenerative model of moral becoming. When integrated with symbolic recursion — the capacity to reweave meaning and pattern across levels of experience — and life-value onto-axiology, which centers value on the flourishing of life itself, this grammar becomes a living framework for personal, cultural, and institutional coherence.
We conclude by calling for the re-indigenization of the self and society, not as a cultural regression, but as a reactivation of the nested, relational, and symbolic conditions under which full moral selves emerge. This is not only a psychological or educational project — it is a civilizational imperative.
Only by restoring the evolved nest, re-sequencing developmental grammar, and reclaiming life-value as the moral compass of society can humanity move from primal wound to moral wholeness, becoming again a participatory expression of the living coherence of the cosmos.
