Amid increasing willingness to transform the global food system and the capacity to feed a growing world population edging towards 10 billion people, Johan Rocsktröm and Sania Nishtar warn of troubling trends.
Johan Rockström’s struggle with a hoarse and much reduced voice became a fitting reflection of the state of the planet: vulnerable but slowly getting better. Together with Sania Nishtar he warned that amid an increasing determination for transforming the global food system, there are still troubling trends. Prevalence of diabetes has doubled in the last 30 years and global shifts to unhealthy diets risk undermining the health gains of the past 50 years.
Johan Rockström is a Professor in Environmental Science with an emphasis on water resources and global sustainability at Stockholm University, and the Executive Director of Stockholm Resilience Centre. He is an internationally recognized scientist on global water resources, global sustainability issues and is best known for leading the recent development of the Planetary Boundaries framework for human development in the current era of rapid global change.
Dr. Sania Nishtar is the internationally acclaimed Pakistani physician and public health expert. She co-chairs the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the future of healthcare and the U.S National Academy of Sciences Global Study on the Quality of Healthcare in low and middle-income countries. In addition, she also chairs the United Nations International Institute for Global Health’s Advisory Committee.

How food connects all the SDGs
The new illustration download high-res version here (credit: Azote Images for Stockholm Resilience Centre) is based on one of the iconic figures of the centre, “the wedding cake”, developed by centre science director Carl Folke and others. It implies that economies and societies are seen as embedded parts of the biosphere.
This model changes our paradigm for development, moving away from the current sectorial approach where social, economic, and ecological development are seen as separate parts. Now, we must transition toward a world logic where the economy serves society so that it evolves within the safe operating space of the planet.
Johan and Pavan concluded that actually all the sustainable development goals are directly or indirectly connected to sustainable and healthy food. They also put forward that goals on eradicating poverty (SDG 1) and zero hunger (SDG 2) requires gender equality (SDG 5), decent jobs (SDG 8) and reduced inequality (SDG 10).
Johan Rockström is Chairman of the EAT Advisory Board. Together with Pavan Sukhdev, Founder and CEO of Gist Advisory, he presented the new view of the SDGs in the opening key note speach at the 2016 EAT Forum.
